8 Reasons the Maldives Is Perfect for Your Honeymoon
Pictures of the Maldives’ gentle, gem-coloured waters, sprinkled with luxury villas and dotted with dazzling white islands are what convince many to book their honeymoon there. Our guest writer, Jayne Gorman, recently returned from her honeymoon in the Maldives and discovered it’s not just the way it looks that makes the Maldives a perfect honeymoon location but the activities and service that make it incredibly romantic too.
Read on to discover 8 reasons why Jayne thinks the Maldives is the perfect destination for your honeymoon:
1. Luxurious Transfers
In the Maldives incredible experiences begin as soon as you land – in fact, even the airport approach is filled with turquoise atolls that look like a scene out of a brochure. The luxury treatment begins as soon as you arrive as all the major hotels have a dedicated desk at the airport with staff waiting to take your luggage off your hands and lead you to your seaplane or speedboat transfer. We transferred by speedboat to our hotel in the North Male Atoll and found the luxury vessel waiting just outside the airport, with cold towels and cold drinks on board to refresh us.
2. Private Villas
Accommodation in the Maldives is largely made up of private villas and you can chose between those on the beach or over the water. We opted for an overwater villa, after lusting over pictures of them for years, and it was even more romantic than we imagined. As the overwater villas come with private infinity pools, lagoon access and, in some cases, butlers too, you need hardly ever leave your accommodation.
3. Private Dining
The idyllic-looking islands in the Maldives seem like they were made for romantic moments and many resorts cater to that by offering private dining experiences for couples. Our resort, Coco Bodu Hithi, offered private beachfront dinners under the stars as well as picnics on remote sandbanks in the middle of the ocean. You can also opt to dine in your villa at any time of day – we particularly enjoyed having a breakfast feast of fruit, pastries and pancakes served on our terrace.
4. Spa Treatments For Two
What better way to relax on your honeymoon than with an indulgent spa treatment for two. One of the highlights of our Maldives honeymoon was a couple’s spa package we enjoyed in an overwater treatment room that looked over the lagoon. For two hours we were scrubbed, buffed, massaged and pampered with a fresh coconut drink to finish. Check your resort’s in room brochure for details of any special offers. We saved 15% by booking a combined massage, facial and reflexology package.
5. Activities For Him Too
My other half thought he might get bored in the Maldives but we ended up filling everyday with a different activity. One of our favourite excursions was a fishing trip on a traditional Maldivian Dhoni. We attempted to catch barracuda using the traditional Maldivian technique of hand-line fishing but when a big one kept getting away we settled for a Red Snapper instead.
6. Incredible Diving
One of the best things to do in the Maldives is meet the local marine life – we were blown away by the beauty of the underwater world just outside our villa. If your resort has a fantastic house reef, like ours did, then you needn’t swim far to see some of the vibrant coral and tropical fish including Oriental Sweetlips, Reef Sharks, Manta Rays and Magnificent Sea Anemones. Another of the excursions we enjoyed was a guided snorkel trip with the resort’s marine biologist. She was able to guide us to a part of the reef that is frequented by sea turtles and we got to swim alongside one of the resident Hawksbill Sea Turtles.
7. Sunset Sailing
The tranquil waters around the Maldives islands look even more beautiful at sunset. A sunset sailing trip is perfect for honeymooners who want to soak up the scenery whilst sipping sparkling wine and enjoying local canapés.
8. Romantic Surprises
If your housekeeper is aware you are on your honeymoon you might find some surprises waiting for you in your room of an evening. Our last night in the Maldives we were wished a happy honeymoon written in flowers across the bed and found an incredibly inviting warm bubble bath decorated with red roses waiting in the bathroom.
In my experience the Maldives really is heaven for honeymooners. Do these 8 reasons have you convinced?
