A weekend of Art, Culture and Food in Luxembourg: What to See, Eat and Experience
For such a tiny little country, Luxembourg packs a “big punch” when it comes to great places to eat, see and explore. Nestled between Belgium, France and Germany, Luxembourg is a European country steeped in history and culture. It’s no wonder that so many visitors fall in love with this wonderful place! You can explore the beautiful country on a range of budgets that will make a spontaneous traveller and those wanting a city-break to pack their hand luggage and jet off at a moments notice!
How to Get There: Plane, Trains, Automobiles and hover-boards!
Unless you are Marty McFly from “Back to the Future”, it is unlikely you will get to Luxembourg via hover-boards. But feat not! Luxembourg is a super easy destination to visit. From mainland Europe, there are a range of extensive roadways and rail networks that allow visitors that wish to include Luxembourg on their European road trip. There is also a range of easy options when it comes to air-travel, with direct flights from major European hubs, connecting places like London, Ireland and places much further afield. With the advent of low-cost fares and airlines, Luxembourg has also become a more affordable country to visit – with fares as little as €60 (return) from Cities like London!
What to See: World-Class Art & History!
The Capital, aptly named, Luxembourg City is a perfect destination to discover the unexpected beauty and heritage of this county. While in the city, don’t forget to visit the ancient fortress that was named the “Gibraltar of the North”. For some added cultural prowess, why not take a peek into the UNESCO protected historical city centre and learn all about “Bock” rock and its eerie Casemates and legends.
If you’re a lover of art, explore outside of the city and head to Clervaux, where the UNESCO protected “The Family of Man” Exhibition is housed. The collection consists of some truly breathe-taking photographs by 273 authors from 68 countries, presented by Edward Steichen. A short 1 hour excursion from Luxembourg City, Clervaux is a pretty little town that is firmly on any art-lovers map of where to visit in the world! The exhibition is beautifully curated, housing some of the world’s most loved photographs. This moving exhibition will truly “knock your artistic socks off”.
No visit to Luxembourg City is complete without seeing the Gëlle Fra (the Golden Lady). Perched high upon her pedestal, the Gëlle Fra is Luxembourg’s answer to “The Statue of Liberty”… with just a little more bling! A photo opportunity is a must! For those wanting to see more of Luxembourg’s finest collection of Art and exhibitions, head towards the National Museum of History and Art Luxembourg – housing an impressive selection – it’s a perfect place to spend a lazy morning!
What To Eat: A Chocolate Lovers Dream!
A stop in Luxembourg is not complete without a trip to the famous “Chocolate House” on Rue du Marche-aux-Herbes, opposite to the Grand Ducal Palace. This City centre, heavenly café, is a sweet lovers dream! Filled with the biggest portions of cakes, boiled sweets and chocolates – this café will satisfy even the most sweet-toothed traveller and make Willy Wonka look like a total amateur!
So what are you waiting for? Enjoy your weekend in Luxembourg!
