With the 2016 Summer Games rapidly approaching, all eyes are on Rio de Janeiro in Brazil as it looks set to welcome visitors from all over the world. We’re sure the atmosphere will be electric, but after the buzz of the Olympics has died down there’s far more to discover in the world’s 5th biggest country than its Carnival capital. We’ve rounded up five places in Brazil that you need to add to your bucket list this year.

Fortaleza

If you need to relax and unwind after partying in Rio you need to make Fortaleza your first stop. The capital of Ceará state might be the fifth largest city in the country, but it’s famous for its beautiful beaches that are great for sunbathing, swimming and also surfing. Be sure to head further along the north eastern coast too to discover more incredible beaches as well as quaint fishing villages.

Iguazu Falls

No visit to South America would be complete without seeing the Iguazu Falls – one of the most impressive natural wonders in the world. The huge gushing waterfalls are an impressive enough sight in themselves, but it’s the lush rainforest and native wildlife that really finish off the beautiful scenes. The Falls span over both Argentina and Brazil but one of the best places to base yourself during your visit is the city of Foz do Iguaçu.

Sao Paolo

Though it often gets overlooked in favour of the likes of Rio, Sao Paolo is the largest city in Brazil and also, in terms of population, one of the biggest in the world! It’s known for its huge skyscrapers and vibrant gastronomy scene and is one of the most diverse places in Brazil. You’ll never be far from great food either – it’s home to the largest Japanese community outside of Japan. And though it might have a reputation as being something of a concrete jungle, there are a surprising amount of green spaces in Sao Paolo including parts of the Atlantic rainforest!

Manaus

Manaus is the capital of the Amazonas state and, as you might expect, is the gateway to the Amazon rainforest. From here you can start your adventure discovering some of the world’s most interesting fauna and flora, but before you do a few days in this north western city is well worthwhile. The city is most famous for its rubber industry which boomed throughout the early 20th century and is home to impressive sights such as the Rio Negro Palace and the Amazonas Opera House. One thing you shouldn’t miss however is the amazing Meeting of the Waters where two rivers – the Negro and Solimões flow side by side without fully mixing for more than three miles.

Olinda

If you’ve had your fill of the big bustling cities, the charming colonial city of Olinda on the north eastern Atlantic coast is the place for you. It’s one of the most well-preserved colonial cities in Brazil and is practically littered with churches, restaurants, museums and pretty colourful houses. You can also get your Carnival fix in Olanda with a yearly celebration of the music and traditions of African culture.
