Theme parks have been a part of Western culture for a very long time, and those modern sites filled with roller coasters and thrilling rides have come a long way from the travelling fun-fairs that first set people’s pulses racing. From parks that explore a particular film studio or based around Disney’s animations through to those that aim to offer all out thrills and excitement, the USA has a wonderful range of different parks to choose from.

Here are some of the best that you can enjoy, and they are well worth making the journey for if you want a fantastic day out:

1. Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson, New Jersey

This impressive park is not only the largest theme park in the world, but it is also home to Kingda Ka, which is the tallest steel roller coaster in the world and boasts the largest drop in the world at 127 metres. The park is split into eleven themed areas, including areas for younger children, while there is also a large Safari Park which makes up a sizeable part of the attraction. There are also rides themed on Batman: The Dark Knight, and rides for younger children featuring Looney Tunes characters.

2. The Adventuredome, Las Vegas, Nevada

This large glass dome incorporates twenty five separate rides that range from large indoor roller coasters and spinning rides to 4D film experiences and smaller rides for younger children and families. The canyon blaster is the largest indoor coaster with a double loop and double corkscrew that offers some great thrills, and this is a wonderful attraction for those who are looking for a break from the gambling and the glitzy shows of the Las Vegas strip.

3. Busch Gardens, Tampa, Florida

A park that makes the most of its natural surroundings, Busch Gardens combines wonderful themed gardens and animal attractions with the thrill of roller coasters, water rides and impressive replicas of different areas from around the world. The chance to see orangutans, zebra and giraffe along with plenty of other animals is balanced by the great range of roller coasters here such as Kumba and Scorpion, while the excellent climate of Florida makes this one of the best amusement parks in the country.

4. Disney California Adventure Park, Anaheim, California

Making the most of the stories and characters of the Disney and Pixar films, this park is great for children and younger teenagers, with the areas based on the films Cars and A Bug’s Life among the most impressive. There are some good roller coasters, but the stand out ride here is Radiator Springs Racers, where you are in a car driving through the world of the film, before joining a final side by side race with another car.

5. Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio

The second oldest operating amusement park in the United States is still one of its best, and is located on a beautiful peninsula stretching out into the waters of Lake Erie. The park is home to two of the ten largest steel roller coasters in the world, Top Thrill Dragster and Millennium Force, and also an indoor water park and a beautiful sand beach that help to make this an amazing day out.

6. Universal Orlando, Florida

One of the country’s most popular theme parks, Universal Studios Orlando has several areas that make the most of the films they have made, with rides based on Transformers and the Revenge Of The Mummy, while there are also great live and 4D shows including Shrek, The Blues Brothers and Beetlejuice. A major recent addition to the park was The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter, which is great for fans of the franchise with two roller coasters and replicas of Hogwarts Castle and the Hogwarts Express among the attractions.

7. Six Flags Great America, Gurnee, Illinois

A short distance from Chicago, this popular theme park follows the blueprint of other Six Flags parks, delivering a great range of roller coasters spread over different themed areas, including dedicated areas for younger children to make the park family friendly. Goliath is the world’s fastest and steepest wooden roller coaster, while rides themed on Batman and Superman add to the park’s great atmosphere.
