Spring into Shape: Sports events around the world
The spring months are ideal to get back in shape, perhaps combining training sessions with the pleasure of a mini holiday. April in particular is a month full of sports events that often take place in the appealing settings of historical centres of the capitals or on beaches warmed by the first rays of sun. Whether you are a fan of jogging or of yoga, of inline skating or of kites, you’ll find what you need in this article.
Prague, marching up and down the bridges
The Prague half marathon, which will take place on 3 April, is one of the most picturesque in Europe, thanks to the route that unfolds in the heart of the old city. It follows the Moldava river and crosses five bridges such as the famous Charles Bridge. It passes in front of the Castle, the Rudofinum concert hall, the National Theatre and the Dancing House. You can’t miss it!
Berlin, on the run among parks and castles
The German capital also holds its traditional half marathon, whose first edition took place in 1984, on 3 April. It starts and ends on Karl-Marx-Allee. In between, it includes 21 kilometeres among the beauties of Berlin: the Brandenburg Gate, the Victory Column, the Charlottenburg Castle and Potsdamer Platz. Along the route there are also many gastronomic stands, ideal both for athletes and cheering spectators.
Paris, on the notes of a salsa
From 19 to 24 April the French capital will host the first edition of the Paris International Salsa Congress at the Hotel Hyatt Regency Etoile. The programme includes almost fifty workshops and 35 performances by international Cuban, Venezuelan and Puerto Rican salsa, mambo, kizomba, bachata and jazz rock artists. Each day will end with a big party on the dance floors where you can let loose until dawn.
Explore Treviso on inline skates
On 3 April, Treviso will host the most famous Italian event dedicated to skating: Roller Day. In addition to the official race, which includes athletes from 12 nations as well as the 21 and 5 km long amateur races, the city comes alive with freestyle competitions, acrobatic skate shows and lessons for beginners and children taught by great champions.
Brussels, the spirit of yoga
From 8 to 10 April, the Belgian capital becomes an oasis of relaxation thanks to the big Yoga Spirit Festival at Tour & Taxis, an ancient, picturesque freight exchange station that has recently been restored. Teachers of the most diverse disciplines will gather here, from classical Hata yoga to Birkan yoga and the yoga wall. There will also be concerts, conferences and meditation sessions, and you can buy books on the topic, music CDs, small rugs and even jewels and food from the ethical marketplace.
