Where to Explore The Norwegian Fjords
You’ve heard of them, you’ve seen the breathtaking pictures and you’ve decided the fjords are for you! But how on earth do you get there for your next holiday? The Norwegian Fjords are known the world over for their dramatic scenes, their picture perfect landscapes and unspoilt natural history… and they’re much closer than you think!
How to get there…
One of the best places to go and explore the fjords is Flåm, nestled very happily at the end of the Aurlandsfjorden – this town is the perfect place to experience the very best that Norway has to offer! One of the easiest ways to get to Flåm is to travel to Bergen by air, while taking the world-renowned Flåmsbana (Flam line) train to the town itself! Most would agree that the Flåmsbana is one of the most stunning train journeys you could ever make, with it regularly featuring on lists of must-see things to do for travellers all around the world! The train literally climbs some 863 metres up over the mountains to arrive at your destination, Flåm.
Seeing is believing…
Once you arrive in Flåm there are many things to see and do right at your feet! Head towards the Stegastein viewpoint, located 25 minutes, or so, from Flåm. It’s very easy to get to by public transport, private transfers or even driving yourself – the local transfers drive via Aurland and across one of Norway’s national tourist roads. This viewpoint juts 30 metres out of the side of the mountain for you to truly grasp the awe-inspiring nature that Norway has to offer… it will truly take your breath away, just don’t forget the camera!
Watch out for whales…
One really awesome thing to do once you arrive in Flåm is to take a Fjord Safari. This is the perfect way for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike to not only travel down the dramatic fjords, but to also spot some of the local wildlife. When you head down the Nærøyfjord (which is a UNESCO World Heritage site) and Aurlandsfjord you will be taken on a magical journey that passes Beitelen, a characteristic mountain that literally sports the Sognefjord in two! Remember to keep your eyes firmly open – we were really lucky to spot some seals and also a whale while we were on our safari… It’s one of those moments that stays with you forever!
Where to stay?
For a truly unforgettable stay at Flåm, try the Fretheim Hotel. Originally a farm in the mid 19th Century, this beautifully crafted hotel is a short walk from the Flåmsbana Station. Its picture perfect location, delicious Norwegian cuisine and rooms overlooking the Aurlandsfjord all make it very hard for you to leave!
Eat your way through the fjords…
One thing is for certain, once you arrive in Flåm you will want to try the local cuisine… we loved trying the local Brunost cheese, which is a dark, almost sweet flavoured cheese! Just be warned –it’s very more-ish! If you prefer some meatier delicacies, why not try Fenalår, a locally seasoned lamb dish that is served with a range of locally sourced vegetables! Yum!
What’s stopping you?
It has been said that everyone should witness the Fjords once in their lifetime…and we couldn’t agree more! So what’s stopping you? Pack your bag, book those train tickets and get ready to be truly blown away by nature!
